The Pleasures of Entertainment

It seems that I´m no good for anything but being entertained. And you know what, Neil Postman? Amusing ourselves to death, my arse! Laughing and a sunny disposition is the only thing that keeps people from jumping off bridges and buildings to end their futile existence. Right, funny but screwed up attitude towards life leads me to...
So everyone was aching for new episodes of House, right? But I must says, knowing that there´ll be a new episode this night somehow makes me appreciate the hiatus jumbled schedule we were kind of accustomed to this season. You get one or two episodes and know that you have time to work through it. It´s probably just me but it took me three replays and about four days to get what I think is most of the references and awesome ambiguities of this episode.
Over the days my thoughts on the various aspects of the show went from e.g. "Aww. How cute is RSL?" to "Gah. What a pathetic wuss is Wilson?" to "Cool. What a jerk is Wilson?" Also syph/blood vial/POTW? However that worked, it was so clever I can pretend that I got my very own explanation because everyone seems to have their own. I read a very clever interpretation on the TWoP board by jjr who said: [House] wanted to challenge [the ducklings]thinking that people's personalities can't be symptoms, he wanted to use that challenge to do his own kind of performance review, and he wanted to show Wilson that Amber hadn't changed, can't be trusted and is impacting their relationship. He accomplished everything he wanted." That makes a lot of sense to me, so I´ll stick with that.
What I find most endearing, and some of you might not know but I´m a Philomele kind of girl, all the episodes of this season are also song titles of more or less well-known pieces of music (Yes, there are even songs called "Head and Heart"). So that gives me an extra referential thrill. Post-modern times FTW! Or maybe I´m just that easy to please. I don´t know about you but I take endless pleasures, to much annoyance of my fellow TV viewers, in giggling at the umptiest rerun of "Maid in Manhattan", shouting at J.Lo "Noooooo. Don´t kiss him. Don´t you see? He´s the incarnate evil." Voldemort as conservative politician, seriously. Still cracks me up.
More entertainment - Street Kings. I finally dragged my boyfriend into the cinema and watched it. (It was kinda cute actually how he didn´t complain at all although he knows I´m a little cuckoo when it comes to Hugh. And he has just committed to watching two episodes of House in a row, tonight!) So, Street Kings. I was all in for Hugh as the bad guy. Really! And
sorion said something about an surprising ending so I expected Biggs to shot Ludlow in the very end or something because he was even more evil than all the other cops. But honestly, I figured out the whole scenario quite early and was a little bit disappointed about the plot. Or more, that it was supposed to be surprise who the bad guys were. I liked the idea of the king who controls everything and nightwatch man who does the scutwork a lot, though. Anyhow, I may be biased but Hugh alone is worth watching the film. Your shallow alter ego always wanted to see a Hugh Laurie-character talking about gay blowjobs, right? So then, just go and see. And after that tell me what happened in the first five seconds after Hughs first appearance and up to twenty seconds after the blowjob scene. I mentioned that on a board the other day but was mistaken as funny, so I´ll never know what happened then because I sat there all excited, cheeks flushed, white noise in my head unless I buy the DVD. I´m not funny, it´s pathetic actually. Also, I got a snappy new car radio with CD function. Now I can listen to all your podfics and Stephen Fry audiobooks I own. YaY!
