Obama in Germany

So Obama has been here and some people went nuts about it whereas some didn´t care at all. It´s funny. I had the feeling the whole nation was splitted into these groups. Even my family was divided like that.
I live some 500 kilometres away from where I grew up and my father called me because (shame on me!) I had forgotten my granny´s birthday... I had enough braincells left though to think about the political ongoings and talked to my father about how cool I thought it was that Obama is holding a speech here in Germany and that it will be his only public speech on his Europe journey. And yadda yadda yadda.
In a nut shell, I was excited and switched channels the whole day between N24, Phoenix, BBC World and CNN to get some news. And my father´s reaction literally was "What do I care? What influence does the American president have on me?" I tried to conjure up my best "DUH! A huge influence... maybe?!" expression. But I totally failed for it was a phone call and I didn´t dwell on the subject any longer because I suspect my family thinks I´ve become kind of arrogant anyway since I´ve moved to the Western part of Germany.
Truth be told, these primary elections were really direly boring and diffuse and the news coverage here was so detailed that even I got the needle. And now the conservative press tries to find something to gripe about. As I understand it he´s forced to accentuate his program and as soon as there´s something that can even remotely can be interpreted as not liberal like supporting the death penalty for child molesters reproaches hail down on him. Well, I don´t know how Obama´s supporters feel about this development (if it can be called that at all) but to me it feels like nitpicking because everyone thinks that having this guy as American president would actually be too good to be true.
Can´t it be like November already and there´s a new president over there? Thank you very much!
By the way John McCain went to a German restaurant somewhere in the US and had a photo op there. How lame is that? He claimed he´d rather go to Germany when he´s President... he wishes!
