Lucky day for House - Mix lovers!
So, I have this theory why last seaons episode titles appeared to be so dull and plain - this theory explains in a way why I think they weren´t.
Season 3 closed with a shot of House playing his new (although probably untuned) acoustic guitar. A symbol for a new beginning that´s taken up in the very beginning of the next season. The first shot of House in season 4 is he playing his snazzy rock guitar - I´m sure there´s a meaning to that.
I think most of the episode titles are also titles of more or less known songs. I´ve collected them in a zip-file for you.
So some might fit not as good as others but with some songs it feels like the writer´s MUST have had them in mind.
So this is kind of a mix and me trying to make a point at the same time. I´ve also linked some of the songs to YouTube videos.
Enjoy!
1. Avril Lavigne - Alone
You're so obvious,
You're so oblivious,
And now you wonder why,
You're the one alone.
So don't apologize,
You don't even realize,
You screwed it up this time
Now you're the one alone
...
I'm just tryin' to let you know,
You really think that you're special,
Oh come on now,
I've seen so much better,
Hey there,
Did you actually think that I cared?
2. Monster Magnet - The Right stuff (Just watch the video, you´ll see what I mean with "the songs fit to episode" with this one in, like, two seconds.)
I don't feel fear or panic
And nothing brings me down.
I'm an aerospaceage warrior
I can fly sideways through sound.
My reflexes and reactions
Are as fast as a machine.
I'm the right stuff baby
The right stuff.
The right stuff
As hard as nails
I never fail
Just watch my trail
3. 97 Seconds
Yeah, right. I had huge problems with that one because there simply isn´t a song that´s called "97 Seconds" (or I haven´t found it or I wasn´t clever enough to get a witty pun, and I´m not quite sure where else the title is refering to. Probably to this or well, not.)
So instead (I bet some of you were yearning for it) I just got you the full version of
Alanis Morissette - Not As We
Reborn and Shivering
Spat out on new terrain
Unsure, unconvincing
This faint and shaky hour
Day one, day one
Start over again
Step one, step one
I'm barely making sense
For now I'm faking it
'Til I'm pseudo-making it
From scratch, begin again
But this time I as I
And not as we
Gun-shy and quivering
Timid without a hand
Feign brave with steel intent
Bit all and hardly here
Eyes wet toward wide open frame,
If God is taking bias, I pray he wants to lose,
4. Mario Lanza - Guardian Angels
Guardian angels around my bed
Joining me in my prayers
They hush the shadows when they dance about
They shoo away the bears
Guardian angels to comfort me
If I wake in the night
They gather all my dreams
Their halos are my light
They dry my tears
If I should weep
They tuck me in
They rouse me from my sleep
Guardian angels around my bed
Standing by till I rise
There's one with shining wings that holds my hand
And shows me Paradise.
5. Def Leppard - Mirror, Mirror
You're the fool, you're the juggler
Hangman and lover, you're not like no other
Take a look into my eyes, tell me what you see
Take a look into my eyes, tell me is it true
Take a look into my eyes, oh when I look at you
Take a look into my eyes, tell me is it me
Is it really me?
Mirror mirror gotta know just what you see
My crystal ball you're lookin' so sly and so sleazy
6. Joe Budden - Whatever It Takes (I´m not sure about this one. The lyrics seem to fit to a certain extent and all the other "Whatever It Takes" songs were pretty sappy lyricswise and I also thought a rap song would make a nice change in this collection.)
Whatever it takes, to find a way...
see I'm depressed lately, but nobody understands
that I'm depressed lately, I'm sorta feeling repressed lately
When all they hearin and seein me less lately (7)...
I got a company that I'm signed to
but they ain't in my company, when all I need is some company
when I start feelin like everybody's done with me
I tryna see what everybody want with me
then the mistress, yeah, the girl from ten minutes is huff (10)
7. Sugababes - Ugly
People are all the same
We only get judged by what we do
Personality reflects name
If i'm ugly then so are you,so are you.
(8. Emmet - You Don´t Want To Know)
Cut your conscience clean
Close your books and burn the down
Paint your mirrors green
You don't want to know
They close your eyes and they close you out
A paint metallic song
Turn you in, turn the volume down
Bleeding right and wrong
(Unfortunately I couldn´t make this song available to you but I got the iTunes link. I think it´s a wonderful one!)
9. Nazareth - Games
Can't you see
We are not going to play at your games
We are not going to ask you for names
Or for some of your history
Did you know
That your father said it's all wrong
Just to keep it going along
It's a part of our mystery
It's our job, you see
You'll agree
There is no point in letting you go
We can wait till the end of the show
Till the audience fades away
Turn around
You can laugh at the mess in your room
It's a nightmare that never can end for you
10. Arcwelder - It´s A Wondeful Lie (Taken that it´s not only this film the title refers to.)
It's all a game
My hearts a flame
No ground to gain
A speeding train
I always know when to quit - when I've overstayed my welcome
I'm not unbreakable - sorry if I gave that impression
I try to help you - but I'm left with a handful of rope burn
If I seem bitter - at least I've conveyed my emotion
It's not how I need it
It's not how I planned it
It's not how I want it
But I got it.
11. Madonna - Frozen
You only see what your eyes want to see
How can life be what you want it to be
You're frozen when your heart's not open
You're so consumed with how much you get
You waste your time with hate and regret
You're broken when your heart's not open
12. The Beatles - Don´t Ever Change (Seriously girls, this song and the episode are like chalk and cheese; and it´s just too good not to post the whole lyrics.)
You never wear a stitch of lace
Your powder's never on your face
You're always wearing jeans except on Sunday
So please don't ever change
I kinda like you just the way you are
You don't know the latest dance
But when it's time to make romance
Your kisses let me know you're not a tom-boy
So please don't ever change
Now don't you ever change
Just promise me you're always gonna to be
As sweet as you are
I love you when you're happy
I love you when you're blue
I love you when you're mad at me
So how can I get tired of you
A lots of other girls I've seen
They know how to treat guys mean
But you would rather die than ever hurt me
So please don't ever change
13. Alice Cooper - No More Mr.Nice Guy
I used to be such a sweet, sweet thing
Till they got a hold of me
I opened doors for little old ladies
I helped the blind to see
I got no friends 'cause they read the papers
They can't be seen with me
And I'm gettin' real shot down
And I'm feelin' mean
No more Mister Nice Guy
No more Mister Clean
No more Mister Nice Guy
They say he's sick, he's obscene
14. Million Dead - Living the Dream (Again not so sure about this one - it´s really punky!)
And yes, there are times when I am tired and stressed,
when I am hasty and I’m under duress
I’m a narcissist and I’m not at my best – I have to say I’m not impressed
Of all the things that I believed in my teens, I’m left with unread books and badly made zines…
Some might-have-beens that somehow even yet
bring a spring to my step
I remember calloused hands and paint-stained jeans,
and I remember safe-as-houses self-belief
15./16. Chris De Burgh -The Head and The Heart (...sniff!)
Let us talk no more, let us go to sleep,
Let the rain fall on the window pane,
And fill the castle keep,
I am weary now, weary to my bones,
Weary from the travelling,
And the endless country roads,
That brought us here tonight, for this weekend,
And a chance to work it out,
For we cannot live together, and we cannot live apart,
It's the classical dilemma between the head and the heart;
She is sleeping now, softly in the night,
And in my heart of darkness she has been the only light,
I am lost in love, looking at her face,
And still I hear the voice of reason,
Telling me to chase these dreams away,
Oh here we go again, we're divided from the start
Now the dawn begins, and still I cannot sleep,
My head is spinning round but now the way is clear to me,
There is nothing left, nothing left to show,
The jury and the judge will see, it's time to let her go,
Now hear the heart,
I believe that time will show,
She will always be a part of my world,
I don't want to see her go,
So I plead my case to hear the heart,
And stay...
It's time to let her go - I don't want to let her go...
Wow! Have you read all through this and are still with me? Then please, if you´re still interested:

Phew... what a graft! Now I´m kinda glad that the season had only 16 episodes.
I´d really like to know what you think about it. Do you think it´s way too farfetched?
Either way, I think that the guys who are responsible for songs in the show do a really great and consistent job.
Please Note: I´ve ripped most of the songs off of Youtube but not all.
I´d like to ask you to buy the music if you like it.
ETA: I´ve updated the link now! Sorry for the inconvenience!

I wonder if the (obviously) using of lyrics will continue, because it seems there will be an episode called "birthmarks" and there are also lyrics, that fit the angsty forecasting of the upcoming season very well.

I really liked the Teardrop version in the last episode... are really sure that they´ll take this one... well, they have to do something about the intro, right?

The files are are only available in the .zip at megaupload. The single links lead to the YouTube videos of most of the songs because like with the Right Stuff the resemblance becomes almost eerie when you watch the video.
So, all the files and cover and back are in the zip.

Date: 2008-07-25 08:25 pm (UTC)a thought on not having a song for 97 seconds. what about Johnny Cash's "Wreck of the Old 97"? it's a classic and as it's a song about a runaway train, the engineer's hubris and ultimate death--it might just work. it reflects the whole "runaway" nature of House's game during this episode as well as his pushing to answer the question about life on the otherside.
here's a link to the lyrics: http://lyricwiki.org/Johnny_Cash:Wreck_Of_The_Old_%2797
i don't have a "shareable" version of the song or i'd sent you copy.
no subject
Date: 2008-07-26 10:03 am (UTC)I have never heard that song before but now that I´ve had a look at the lyrics and listened to song on YouTube I´m... not entirely sure. It´s an intruiging idea though. I´ll definitely think about when I watch that episode again because at the moment I´m not aware of that "runaway nature" you mentioned. But I see what you mean with this heading towards an answer. There is indeed a allegoric quality to the song.
no subject
Date: 2008-07-27 03:48 am (UTC)Cash is fantastically allegorical--amazing body of work to draw from there. :)
no subject
Date: 2008-07-30 12:11 pm (UTC)Actually that makes a lot of sense to me but you´d have to do more interpretation work to get to that than with the other songs. Some of which I´m actually convinced were an inspiration to the title inventors (if such a person exists whoich I doubt because I read at Doris Eagan´s blog that the writer usually make up their own titles. Maybe it´s all a big coincidence but again this show is House and there are surely less coincidences than they want to make us believe.)
